This three movment work (Fanfare, Eternal Calls of Taps, and Fugue and Flourishes) was commisioned by Bugles Across America to celebrate their fifth anniversary and was premiered at the 2006 BAA conference, held in Naperville, Illinois. The piece features melodic and rhythmic intertwining lines, lots of textural effects, all creating a rather complex, exciting, and rather fascinating work. The composition evokes a raft of emotions for both listener and player. A deep piece.

From the composer: About Three Miniatures:
Bugles Across America had two requests: that I include the hymn Eternal Father and the illustrious Call of Taps. The first movement, Fanfare, centers around festive harmonic shifts and embellishments with traces of Taps rising out of the texture in the middle of the movement.
Initially, I had thought to arrange the two requested pieces as separate movements. However, as I analysed the melodic shape of Eternal Father, I noticed much of the hymn outline as a major triad which works perfectly atop Taps, which in itself is entirely constructed upon the major triad. I therefore decided to synthesize the two and create a second movement, Eternal Calls of Taps.
The third movement, Fugue and Flourishes, begins with a modulating motive that is then handed off to another voice a fifth hight, in typical fugue fashion. The fugue contineus but is cut short by a quick, imitataive figure which brings the work to an end. Fragments of both Eternal Father and Taps are included towards the end of this movement. - Clint Needham
