"Jauchzet, frohlocket, auf, preiset die Tage!," the famous opener to Bach's landmark piece, arranged for two piccolo trumpets, one D trumpet, two C trumpets, two B-flat trumpets, and flugelhorn. Very effective and quite exciting, with the famous lines heard in wonderful, intertwisting counterpoint. Almost an "8" in its complexity and demands, but it is worth it!
ITG Journal, October 2015, page 93:
Although challenging due to the use of multiple trumpets in the original key of D, (this) highly effective adaptation will undoubtedly be very enjoyable...for both the performers and the audience, especially when adding a splash of Baroque color from a major work to any holiday program.

TRP-074 Cleveland Sketches [5] Needham, C.

Composer: Needham, Clint
Number of Trumpets: 6
Key: C Major concert
Duration: 9 minutes
Difficulty: 5
The second prize winner of the 2004 ITG Composition Contest (solo trumpet w/trumpet ensemble accompaniment) and premiered at the 2004 ITG Conference in Denver, this three-movement work is written for trumpet solo and trumpet ensemble accompaniment. All six parts are for C trumpets (which means that they could all be played on B-flats). All parts have lots of action and independence. Very idiomatic for trumpets but with fresh approaches to interplay, color, and accompaniment. Fanfares, warm melodies, playful rhythms. Movements' names: Crossing the Cuyahoga, The Skyline at Night, and The Emerald Necklace. From the composer: About Cleveland Sketches: The first movement, Crossing the Cuyahoga, is a heroic fanfare depicting the almost overwhelming scene of towering buildings as one crosses the river into Cleveland, Ohio. The serenity of the evening lights of the city as viewed from far away are the inspiration for The Skyline at Night, depicted by a lyrical song on flugelhorn accompanied by sustained notes in the cup-muted trumpet parts. The last movement, The Emerald Necklace, is a depiction of playful activity in the metroparks which surround the entire Cleveland area. - Clint Needham

TRP-064 Concert Fanfare [4] Ewazen, E.

Number of Trumpets: 6
Key: Bb Major concert
Duration: 3 minutes
Difficulty: 4
One of Triplo Press's most popular pieces, with over 850 copies sold since its publication in 2000. A very strong and colorful work with the harmonic, melodic, and dynamic color for which Eric Ewazen is so well known; uses interplay between the various players and pairings to excellent effect. Contrasts between fanfaresque and legato playing and loud and soft abound throughout. The tessitura of the first trumpet is at the top of the staff, with high C being the top note. Fun to rehearse because of the smart writing, and the product is very satisfying for both player and audience. An excellent contribution to the genre.

The original composition comes from a four-part treble-voiced a cappella work, but Olcott has presented this text in a new light. A striking and innovative work with rhythmic, harmonic and melodic excitement. Beautifully written and great fun for the players and audience alike. Three of the parts double on flugelhorns. The recording says it all.
ITG Journal, Jaunary 2015, page 101:
"...an exciting piece for the intermediate/advanced undergraduate trumpet ensemble, and directors will appreciate the challenges presented. Developing consistency of intonation, balance, and color between C trumpets and flugelhorns will challenge students’ abilities to listen and adjust within the ensemble (as will) frequent use of double tonguing, syncopation, duple/triple rhythmic ostinati, extremities of range and large intervallic leaps. The piece can effectively be used to open or close a recital. Beautiful melodic lines, interesting group textures, and a wide rhythmic vocabulary await those who have time to prepare this excellent piece to performance quality."

The ever-popular traditional Israeli song of celebration. Excellent and infectious spirit. Great for holiday seasons and celebratory/festive occasions. Also great as an encore. Really fun to play. Composer: Bliss, Philip Paul
Arranger: Olcott, James L.*
Number of Trumpets: 8
Key: Eb Major concert
Duration: 4 minutes and 11 seconds
Difficulty: 4
THIS WORK WAS MISTAKENLY MISLABELED AND MISATTRIBUTED IN THE MARCH 2023 EDITION OF THE ITG JOURNAL, page 75.
*This work is an adaptation by James Olcott of ON A HYMNSONG OF PHILIP BLISS by David Holsinger, written in 1989 for concert band and based on the hymn, "It is Well With My Soul", and is used by permission of the composer.
Beautiful and warm -- and not technically difficult. For two Eb trumpets (parts available for Bb's), one Bb trumpet, three flugelhorns and two bass trumpets in treble clef so that the parts can be read by flugelhorns. The sensitivity and blending of the melody, intertwining lines and lush harmonies make this piece a wonderful experience in human expression. It is suggested that all parts except the two bass trumpets be doubled unless the bass trumpet parts are on flugels.
ITG Journal, March 2023, page 75:
"...beautiful new transcription...With imitation, contrary motion, and open intervals, the piece provides ample opportunity to work on intonation, balance, blend, and Renaissance performance practice...This gorgeous and moving setting of a timeless hymn melody is certainly welcome for inclusion in any trumpet ensemble library or concert program, serving as a great ensemble showcase for lyricism and musicality."

Composer: Puente, Tito
Transcriber: Olcott, James L.
Number of Trumpets: 5
Accompaniment: piano, guitar (opt.), bass and drums
Key: Eb Major concert
Duration: 4 minutes
Difficulty: 5
Mambo Beat, written in the mid 1950's, was originally an instrumental showcase labeled as "mambo jazz" and has been updated starting at the solo section to reflect the more modern salsa feel. Every effort has been made to make this transcription/arrangement as authentic as possible, giving written examples of the authentic styles for the rhythm section. The piano part is written with stylistic patterns. The bass part should be read as written. The latin percussion instruments (patterns are given as examples) heighten the authenticity of the work but are not necessary. The guitar part is supplemental. The recording is of the beginning of the piece and does not reflect the salsa section, which carries the arrangement to the end. (see the piano part in the written example).

FREE. Eight Bb trumpets, four flugelhorns, percussion. This arrangement can be performed as a solo, as a duet, as a trio, etc, up to eight trumpets, by adding the next part in the score. The four flugelhorn parts add depth and padding to the sound. In this conception of the anthem, it is to start out symbolizing a country alone, quiet but iron-willed, clear of mind, determined and resolved, to be quickly joined by more and more forces as the piece progresses, building to a climax of strength, unity, and defiance. Arranger: Olcott, James L.
Number of Trumpets: 15
Accompaniment: 14-part trumpet ensemble
Key: G Major concert
Duration: 5 minutes
Difficulty: 6
A beautiful and colorfully arranged piece for solo trumpet. Jazz oriented chords and lots of color underlie a very lyrical melody and intertwining lines. One of the trumpet classics. For solo trumpet in Bb, three piccolo trumpets in Bb, two Eb trumpets, four Bb trumpets, four flugelhorns, and optional but highly recommended low brass part (originally written for bass trumpet), and optional percussion. The wide variety of tone colors in this piece is achieved by careful and conscious unison doublings of lines between the differently pitched instruments, so it is very important that all the parts are covered, each with the instruments of designated pitches. A terrific crowd pleaser and not very tough on the soloist (grade 4). The piece is set at difficulty grade 6 because of the accompaniment.

A great adaptation of this jazz standard. Solo space if the jazzer wants it, or Armstrong's solo, written out, can be played. Fun to play, excellent for learning style and great for the audience. The recording is by Jan Glaesel and is gorgeously interpreted.
ITG Journal, October 2022, page 115:
Struttin' with Some Barbeque is an excellent mid-level arrangement (rated 6 out of 9 in difficulty by Triplo Press) that would be most suitable for an advanced undergraduate university ensemble seeking to learn how to play an early jazz classic orI a professional ensemble trying to showcase the music of Louis Armstrong....With its detailed notations and style markings in the accompanying score and clearly marked individual parts, this 3'33" arrangement would make an excellent feature to open a special event or be played at any recital or a concert.

Key: Eb Minor concert
Duration: 6 minutes

A solo for B-flat trumpet (double on flugelhorn) with a six-part trumpet ensemble as accompaniment. Tempestas is the Roman goddess of storms. Hobbs was inspired by Hurricane Irma and says that this piece has the intensity to depict the storm's ferocity yet elicits as well the awe of the massive power of nature. The solo parts requires a range up to E-natural, but is otherwise not terrifically difficult. Accompaniment parts are rated 4's and 5's in difficulty. Some very interesting Harmon mute effects are employed in this piece. A really cool piece to show off your strongest player with fellow trumpeters creating the backup.

TRP-067 The Arban Companion [6] Olcott, J.

Composer: Olcott, James L.
Key: various
Duration: various
Difficulty: 6
The ARBAN COMPANION, essentially second (duet) parts to the Fourteen Characteristic Studies of Jean Baptiste Arban and part of Triplo Press's COMPANION SERIES, evolved from many years of using etudes from the standard pedagogical literature with students and playing "behind" them to help with conceptions of sound, style, pitch, tempo, and phrase. In my experience, it was quickly found that focus on technique quickly gave way to a much more musical experience. These 14 etudes are fun, challenging, and satisfying by themselves, and can be played and studied as stand-alone works. They are most effective, however, when played as conceived: as duets to Arban's Fourteen Characteristic Studies, published in almost every rendition of his Conservatory Method. (The editing of dynamics and articulations of the Arban Companion is based on the publication of the Arban Complete Conservatory Method by Carl Fischer, Inc.) Trumpet players may also perform and study these etudes along with the compact disc recording by David Baldwin of the Leduc publication, available through the International Trumpet Guild.
ITG Journal, January 2004:
"An etude book is judged by its practicality, accessibility, musicality, and longevity. Olcott's latest companion measures up on all counts." "Every trumpet player and teacher who utilizes the Arban's Characteristic Studies should possess this book!"

Composer: Anderson, Leroy
Arranger: Ford, Barry
Number of Trumpets: 7
Key: F Major concert
Duration: 3 minutes

A really fun piece to rehearse and perform. An uptempo work on the light side and a great closer. Lots of scale passages and repeated melodies that transfer from part to part. Beautifully and idiomatically arranged. One of the "happiest" pieces going. Highly recommended. (No need to play the ending quite as fast as I've done on the recording). TRP-076 The Small Companion [6] Olcott, J.

Composer: Olcott, James L.
Key: various
Duration: various
Difficulty: 6
The SMALL COMPANION, essentially second (duet) parts to the 27 Melodic and Rhytmical Excercises for Trumpet by J.L. Small, and part of Triplo Press's COMPANION SERIES, evolved from many years of using etudes from the standard pedagogical literature with students and playing 'behind' them to help with conceptions of sound, style, pitch, tempo, and phrase. In my experience, it was quickly found that focus on technique quickly gave way to a much more musical experience. These 27 etudes are fun, challenging, and satisfying by themselves, and can be played and studied as stand-alone works. They are most effective, however, when played as conceived: as duets to Small's etude book, published by Carl Fischer. The first recording is of Etude No. 1, while the second is of Etude No. 2.
ITG Journal, January 2009, page 80:
"...well conceived, easy to execute." "The amount of thought and effort that went into these duets is quite impressive. To this author, the greatest testament would be that although the Small Studies have not been required in my studio, the attractiveness of having this wonderful source as a musical reinforcement (as well as an end of the lesson duet reward) has moved me to change the syllabus for next year. Congratulations to James Olcott for another outstanding contribution to the pedagogical repertoire."

Written for and premiered by Tromba Mundi at the 2011 International Trumpet Guild Conference. A very fun piece to play. Takes a bit of practice to understand and get into the rhythmic groove that is typical of the square dance genre, but it is very rewarding for both audience and player. A really great closer.
ITG Journal, March 2014, page 93:
An exciting new work for trumpet quintet...performers of this work will enjoy the constant rhythmic groove, as well as the spirit and feel of the piece...A great opener...The Square Dance will be another fantastic addition to the trumpet ensemble repertoire.

TRP-167 The Standard [4] Olcott, J.

Composer: Olcott, James L.
Number of Trumpets: 10
Key: Eb Major concert
Duration: 2 minutes and 37 seconds
Difficulty: 4
A lively and fun march that owes its name due to its inspiration, namely the most standard work in the trumpet literature, the Trumpet Concerto in E-flat by Franz Joseph Haydn. Most every phrase and harmonic sequence is a direct descendant of some passage in the trumpet's most well-known solo composition.
ITG Journal, March 2019, page 99:
"James Olcott has been providing quality arrangements for trumpet ensemble for many years. With The Standard, however, Olcott contributes his own work in the form of a march for ten-piece trumpets ensemble (in B-flat) based on the most standard piece in our repertoire—the Haydn Trumpet Concerto. Some passages are cleverly subtle, as in the opening theme that incorporates quotations from the first and second movements. Others are much more obvious, as in the trio in which material from the third movement is prominently featured. As a part of Triplo Press's Patriotic Series... "this enjoyable piece could be included in any patriotic or trumpet ensemble program with younger students or more accomplished players." This celebration of our instrument's most well-known work will delight any audience..."

    Number of Trumpets: 8
    Key: Bb Major concert
Duration: 2 minutes and 18 seconds
    Difficulty: 6
A 20th century fanfare beginning with two 4-part choirs, introducing a catchy phrase with a familiar response. As the piece progresses, it transitions into a darker, more mysterious mood, with rich lower parts supporting an exposed, beautiful melody. A cascading line drives the music back into a fanfare-like development, incorporating additional cascading figures. When the dark, mysterious atmosphere returns, it's important not to overplay the upper choir (which reaches a concert D-flat) to maintain the piece's character. This section closes with more cascading lines and a return to the fanfare. The piece concludes with four 2-part choirs, bringing all the thematic elements together for a powerful finale that’s sure to receive an enthusiastic response from any audience!

An original medium tempo concert march in 6/8 in the style of Sousa. Arpeggiated duets in the B and C sections of the work highlight the "trumpet" aspect of the piece, and it is a great deal of fun to play and listen to. For clearest effect, flugelhorns are suggested for parts nine and ten, and an E-flat trumpet is preferred over a B-flat trumpet or B-flat piccolo trumpet for part five so as to help blend and balance. An alternate part for E-flat trumpet is provided in this publication for part five. "Trumpets" is the first original work written specifically for trumpet ensemble in the traditional march style, and was penned for and premiered by the Twin Cities Trumpet Ensemble of Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota, USA to high enthusiasm. One piccolo trumpet and five Bb's are used for the joyous Sussex Carol, and the five lower voices switch over to flugelhorns for a very warm rendition of the Wexler that utilizes beautiful counter-melodies. Optional percussion includes finger cymbals, triangle, high tomtom, and crash cymbals. (The first recording is without percussion; the second with). A very effective and enjoyable arrangement.

    TRP-223 Typewriter, The [5] Anderson, L. (Olcott)

    Composer: Anderson, Leroy

    Number of Trumpets: 16
    Key: Bb Major concert
Duration: 1 minute and 54 seconds
    Difficulty: 5
A very fun an effective work. Technical demands in the melody line are what you would expect in this very famous piece, and the line is beautifully placed on E-flat trumpets. Playing the piece on the horns listed has a great effect on color, and a great - and fun - challenge for the players.
The other surprise with this arrangement is the percussion section, played by three trumpet players using their instruments to simulate the typewriter keystrokes, carriage bell and carriage return. Instructions are including in the publication. Listen to the recording to hear the effect and check out the treble clef sign next to the microphone to the right in this window. The piece can be played in the traditional manner with an actual typewriter (thus 13 rather than 16 trumpeters), but the other way is so much more fun...
ITG Journal, June 2023, page 77:
"James Olcott continues to share his wonderful arrangements with the trumpet community...."Extremely playable for all levels as melodies and rhythms are simple and the range is manageable"..."a fun, energetic piece that audiences tend to love"..."would be a highlight for any chamber concert or recital."

A fairly easy and very effective arrangement of this light 3/4 standard. Flugels are recommended for most of the chart. Sort of a solo feature for first trumpet with solo space for trumpet and piano. Range does go to f''' for lead. The recording is from the Summit Records CD "Collaboration" with Mike Vax and Ronald Romm, played here a little more energized than originally conceived.

Originally a piano piece (Opus 52, No. 2). Short, light, spritely -- and challenging. An excellent transcription. An eight-measure phrase paraphrased six times. Fun to play and excellent for style and senses of time, rhythm and ensemble. Listening to a recording by a pianist would be of great benefit.

Commissioned by Ed Reid for the University of Arizona's performance at the ITG conference in Australia in 2010 (the recording is of that performance), this piece is in three movements: Getting In, Whilst There, and Recovery and Out. The first movement is reminiscent of Paris in the 30's, the second is a slow dirty blues, the third a medium up tempo swing duet. Each movement can be played separately, but it is fun to play the piece as a set. Of the work, the composer writes, "Woolloomooloo is an eastern suburb of Sydney, Australia, and the name may derive from the Aboriginal pronunciation of windmill or even place of plenty. The town, having recently gone through extensive gentrification, doesn't look like it did in the past. When it was first nicknamed "The Loo," it was a rough-and-tumble working class district of New South Wales. Filled with bars, it was often a destination of those who sought to drink on the cheap. This work describes the trip from Sydney to inside "The Loo," party time, and leaving the scene in a good mood."

A Jazz samba rendering of this classic. Tastey ensemble and background licks behind solo introduction of the tune and open solo space for any player. A fun and unusual chart to play and study. Note: the recording differs from the chart in the roadmap of the solo backgrounds and the ending. The printed version is an improvement. NOT CURRENTLY AVAILABLE.
ITG Journal, October 2022, page 114:
...this arrangement features 150 measures of enjoyable and exciting music. Marked as moderately difficult (6 out of 9 difficulty rating by the publisher), the piece should require limited preparation but still challenge a strong undergraduate ensemble or professional ensemble wanting a great arrangement to open a concert, perform for a special event, or present at a recital. Teachers and educators looking for a dynamic chart for a large trumpet ensemble (8 trumpets) should look no further than Kevin Mills' great arrangement.
